The X Factor (Part 4)

Well done gang: Simon Cowell high-fived Ryan from F.Y.D as he is joined by his final three groups

With two girl groups to choose from, Cowell selected Belle Amie, the foursome put together after they auditioned as solo artists.

'You were too good to let go,' he explained. 'The disadvantage was that you were competing with a lot of groups who had longer to prepare themselves.'

But it was a yes, and the four ran off screaming with delight, mobbing a happy Dermot O'Leary as they gasped; 'We did it!'

Handpicked: Simon Coewll selected Belle Amie for the final 12, having put them together during the audition process

Cowell's boys: Like the girls, 1Direction is made up of five failed solo singers

That meant it was bad news for Husstle. 'I'm really really sorry,' said Cowell, as they broke down in tears.

Princes and Rogues also got a no. The five men aged from 20 to 28, were sent off, along with The Reason.

Cowelll told them: 'It's a very hard song to sing and I think it showed up a few weak spots. It's bad news boys.'

Not for Cowell: He said they'd both grown on him, but it was a no for both Twem and Diva fever

But 1Direction got a yes.

'When it worked, it worked,' said Cowell. 'My head is saying it's a risk and my heart is saying that you deserve a shot and that's why it's been difficult.

'I've gone with my heart, you're through. I am so impressed with all of you, I mean it.'

That left FYD, who wanted to prove they could sing as well as dance.
'We wanna be all-round entertainers,' they said.

They've done it! FYD (For Your Direction) met through dance classes at London¿s Pineapple Studios and the band was formed over Facebook messages

Cowell was impressed: 'I thought vocally it wasn't perfect, but it was better than I've heard before.

'It has been genuinely one of the hardest things that I've had to judge. So I've mad a decision about you five, Welcome to the top 12.'

And that left Parisian twins Medhi and Samir, who go by the name Twem and comedy act Diva Fever, who both got a no.

*** Meet the final 12 ***

Girls (aged 16-27) mentored by Cheryl Cole: Rebecca, Katie and Cher

Cher Lloyd, 17 (6/1 to win)
Dubbed mini-me by fans for her similarities to mentor Cheryl Cole, and named after the singing superstar, she has been touted as a potential winner.

Katie Waissel, 24 (20/1)
The receptionist from London is getting a bit of a reputation as someone desperate to be famous - she has already appeared on a online reality show.

Rebecca Ferguson, 24 (4/1)
The mother of two from Liverpool impressed judges when she told how she had returned to school to study law to provide a better life for her children now aged five and four.

The groups, with mentor Simon Cowell: 1 Direction, Belle Amie and F.Y.D

FYD (For Your Direction) (25/1)
Who They Are: Jordan Gabriel, 22, Alex Murdoch, 22, Matt Newton, 26, Ryan Lee Seager, 22, and Kalvin Lamey, 25.
The Verdict: A collection of models and dancers they already have sizeable egos. The group met through dance classes at London’s Pineapple Studios and the band was formed over Facebook messages.

Belle Amie (16/1)
Who They Are: Esther Campbell, 17, Sophia Wardman, 23, Geneva Lane, 20 and Rebecca Creighton, 21.
The Verdict: All four entered as solo artists but were not strong enough candidates on their own. Simon Cowell opted to put them together as a group.

1 Direction (9/2)
Who They Are: Niall Horan, 17. Harry Stiles, 16, Zain Malik, 17, Liam Payne, 17 and Louis Tomlinson, 18.
The Verdict: Effectively a group of Justin Bieber type singers this group is set to be a favourite with X Factor fans.

Boys (16-27) ¿ mentored by Dannii Minogue: Aidan, Matt and Nicolo

Aiden Grimshaw, 18 (8/1)
From: Manchester
The Verdict: A former child actor and wedding singer he has been tipped for the finals since his first audition. A little bland but that probably makes him a perfect candidate to be moulded by The X Factor sausage factory.

Matt Cardle, 27 (11/4)
From: Essex
The Verdict: Bookmakers have the painter and decorator as one of their favourites to win. He already has a part time band Seven Summers and brings a bit of rock and roll to the show.

Nicolo Festa, 22 (16/1)
From: Italy
English is not his first language but the handsome student claims being a singer is his destiny. Incredibly confident but not without talent he is definitely going to irritate with his self belief.

The Over 28s mentored by Louis Walsh: John, Mary and Storm

John Adeleye, 30 (14/1)
Sure to be a housewives favourite he is a self taught singer with bags of charm. He works in a care home in London and runs music activities for residents. He has admitted this is probably his last chance to hit the big time. Probably the nicest contestant The X Factor has seen yet - so he’ll almost certainly be voted off early.

Mary Byrne, 50 (20/1)
From: Dublin
The Verdict: Hailed as the new Susan Boyle this dowdy supermarket worker has waited more than thirty years to follow her dream. Expect a similar SuBo style makeover as the competition progresses.

Storm Lee, 37 (16/1)
Edinburgh-born Lee Gardner he changed his name when he was 16 and moved to the US. He released an electropop album in 2008 called Soulfillapopkilla and two singles, I Came Here To Dance and 1985. He’s recording backing vocals for stars including Meatloaf and Ozzy Osbourne, but now wants to be the main star but with his strange look and aggressive attitude it is unlikely viewers will make him one.

The overs: Louis Walsh chose Storm Lee, John Adeleye and Mary Byrne as his final three

Over in Ireland, Louis Walsh was picking his final three acts from among the over 28s.

He told Tesco check-out worker Mary Byrne: 'You draw me in and I'm like, where is this voice coming from. '

But he had some concerns, after the 50-year-old forgot the words as she performed for him. 'I would worry on the live shows "are you going to crumble?"'
But he gave her a chance, putting her through.

Awaiting the news: Checkout worker Mary Byrne sits opposite Louis Walsh

It's a good news: Mary promised not to let her mentor down

Mary broke down at the good news, sobbing and hugging her mentor. 'I will work so hard, I promise you I will. I promise you I will not let you down.'

There were tears of a different kind as Louis Walsh gave the bad news to a sobbing Yuli Miguel, 32.

He told the Dutch singer: 'You were great, we loved you, you've been an amazing contestant.' But there wasn't a place for her. After drying her tears, he told the camera: 'I didn't think she'd be that bad!'

Bad news was also given to Londoner Elesha Moses, 29, who Louis told: 'You're very entertaining, you've got a good voice. But the thing that worries me is why hasn't something happened for you, before this.'

Going home: Dutch Yuli Miguel and Brazilian Wagner Carrilho didn't impress Louis

And to Justin Vanderhyde, 30, from Holland, who he told: 'It's not good news. You're going home.'

Brazilian act Wagner Carrilho, 54, also got the bad news, despite being told: 'The thing about you wagner is you're very unique and you're very passionate when you sing.'

But despite warning John Adeleye, 30, that he needed 'more time', Louis gave him a yes.

'I think you'd need a lot of work to go on the live shows,' he said. 'But it's good news! You're going through to the live shows!'

And one contestant was simply over the moon to go through.

Telling mum: John Adeleye, 30, has got a place in the final, despite being told he needed 'more time'

Storm Lee, 37, lives in LA but is Scottish, couldn't believe the good news. 'What? Oh Louis, thank you so much,' he gasped. 'It's just so weird to finally get a yes.'
Meanwhile, after his early annoyance at being given the groups, Simon Cowell made the best of things.

And having put together two of the groups from rejected performers, it was obvious who was going through.

The boys: Danni selected Aiden Grimshaw, Matt Cardle and Nicolo Festa as her final three

Dannii's boys had been first to hear her verdict, with Aiden Grimshaw, 18, from Manchester, going through.

Dannii had warned him: 'The things that make me nervous are just watching the performance, it's like you're on hot coals.' But she put him through to the final 12, leaving him to gush: 'I'm so excited I'm speechless... which is unusual!'

Joining him was painter and decorator Matt Cardle, who at 27 felt the X Factor was his final chance to make it. 'It's home time or it's game on,' he said.

Dannii's boys: She chose painter and decorator Matt Cardle and Italian 'diva' Nicolo Festa

Finalist: Aiden Grimshaw, 18, from Blackpool, is in the final 12

Dannii was concerned that he avoided eye contact with her. 'We just kept saying "I want him to look at us!"' she said. But she gave him the benefit of a second chance. 'I cannot believe it,' he gasped, giving her a hug.

Next to get the good news was Italian student Nicolo Festa, 22. Dannii told him bluntly: 'The pros are that you're a diva, and you know it, and you work it. The cons are that you're a diva... and you know it and you work it!'
But Dannii also had to break the bad news to five hopefuls.

Dismissed: Early favourite Marlon McKenzie and Karl Brown were both unlucky

One initial favourite not to make it through was father-of-two Marlon McKenzie.
'I really want to provide the best for my children,' he told the camera. 'I want to be a singer because I enjoy singing. This is like 21 years of a dream.'

But Dannii told him: 'It's really obvious for me to say that you've got the pop package. What I worry about is that you're not vocally as strong as some of the other guys in this group.'

He took his dismissal with grace, giving Dannii a hug.

Also unlucky was Paije Richardson, a cinema worker who said: 'A no would take me back home to my boring life and having to tell everyone no, and having that fear of never making. It's just so hard to face.'

Breaking the news: At an idyllic villa in Australia, Dannii told Paije Richardson he was out of the competition

Devastated: 'I'm used to disappointment,' said Paije, while John Wilding was 'rejected'

But face it he had to, telling Dannii: 'I'm used to disappointment. I have nothing else to pin my hopes on so at the moment it just is the end of the world for me.'

She had told him: 'There's a sound to your voice that can't be taught. What kind of wasn't there for me was just putting that personality into the performance. You didn't make it through, I'm so sorry.'

It was bad news too for John Wilding, who said: 'To come all this way and then be rejected? It's hard.'

But there was concerns he didn't have enough life in his performance. 'Are you a bit too rehearsed and too practiced?' asked Dannii 'I think you need to allow that spontaneity to come in.'

Also disappointed was 17-year-old Welsh singer Tom Richards, who had divided opinion at his initial audition.

Not to be: Tom Richards, 17, had his hopes crushed as he was told the bad news

Seeing the luxury villa in Melbourne, he had reflected: 'If I do well and do well enough, I could even be here one day, this could be the lifestyle I could live.'

But it wasn't to be, and he sobbed as Dannii told him: ' What confused me is whether you can pull it together and say this is who I am as a solo artist.'

There was bad news for Karl Brown, 19, from Northern Ireland. 'It's controlling the nerves, I think you let them get the better of you yesterday,' explained Dannii. 'I don't think you're ready for this yet.'

He said simply: 'I'm gutted.'

the X Factor (Part 1)

By LIZZIE SMITH and LIZ THOMAS

Cheryl's girls: Cher Lloyd, Katie Waissel and Rebecca Ferguson made it through to the final 12 of the X Factor; but Gamu missed out, shocking many

Her audition was Cheryl Cole's favourite of the series.

And it seems that first impressions really do count, after Cher Lloyd won a place in The X Factor's live shows - even though she struggled to sing a single note in her latest performance.

Of course for many it was bad news, including an early favourite. It was a no from Cheryl for Zimbabwean singer Gamu Nhengu, who had won many fans with her quirky singing style.

Gamu's omission was thought by many to be a mistake, with more than 25,000 joining a Facebook group called 'Gamu should have got through' within three hours of the show airing.

The drama came as the 32 hopefuls were whittled down to 12 ahead of the live shows, which begin next week.

There were no surprises as Simon Cowell put through both of his hand-picked groups, made up of rejected solo artists. Belle Amie and 1 Direction joined FYD.

Dannii chose Aiden Grimshaw, Matt Cardle and Nicolo Festa, while Louis Walsh picked Mary Byrne, John Adeleye and Storm Lee.

There was no shortage of tension as the final 12 were announced.

Cheryl admitted that putting Cher through to the next stage was one of the 'hardest decisions' she had made on the show as the 17-year-old was overcome with tears during the judges' houses stage of the competition.

Drama: Cher broke down when she received the good news, after convincing herself she was going home

Cheryl admitted that putting Cher through to the next stage was one of the 'hardest decisions' she had made

The teenager, who is fighting a throat infection, began speaking the words of an R Kelly song before breaking down.

Rejected: Gamu Nhengu was a favourite of many, but missed out in a controversial decision by Cheryl Cole

On Saturday's show, Cheryl could be seen comforting Cher before asking her if she wanted to try again later.

But show producers had to subtitle the young hopeful's response as she whispered back: 'I am done now, I am done. Sorry.'

Despite being the bookies' favourite to win this year's contest, her failure to perform left her future in doubt.

But last night, Cheryl opted to put her through to the final based on her earlier performances.

Before giving Cher her verdict, she explained: 'When I go back to the first time I ever saw you perform I instantly thought you were fantastic, I was really excited to see you again and I get here yesterday and it's like you've fallen apart and you weren't the girl that I'd seen before.

'It is one of the hardest decisions I can genuinely say I've made in the three series that I've done, because my heart and my head are pulling in completely different directions.'

Show insiders admitted Cheryl has an 'affinity' with Cher and sees similarities with herself when she first appeared on ITV's Popstars: The Rivals in 2002.

Like the Girls Aloud singer, Cher, from Malvern in Worcestershire, comes from a troubled background and has been in scrapes herself in the past.

Several of her relatives have had brushes with the law, and the aspiring singer was suspended from school at 14 after getting into a fight.

Cher said: 'I have made mistakes in the past too but I believe everyone deserves a second chance.'

She's through: Cheryl dramatically broke down in tears during the decision making progress, but quickly regained her composure to lambast contestant Katie Waissel, for being 'a little bit annoying'

But many fans commenting on online message boards felt that the teenager should not have been put through to the finals because she is simply not up to being in the competition.

A concerned viewer said: 'This young girl seems so emotionally fragile. It really did make for uncomfortable viewing.'

Another said: 'I don't think Cher is ready for all this. I feel she is not emotionally strong enough and doesn't have the self-confidence to enter a music career.

'She should have given it a few years, matured a bit, then entered.'

She's out: Gamu was an early favourite, but didn't win a place in Cheryl's final three, nor did Raquel Thomas

Others voiced concerns that Cher was being given preferential treatment despite her poor performance because she had won over Cheryl early in the competition.
One said: 'She wasn't very good but is clearly going to sail through because she is Cheryl's pet.'

Another commented: 'It wouldn't be fair if she was put through to the live shows even though she messed up at this stage, because that means they were planning on putting her through the whole time which isn't fair for all the other contestants at the judges' houses.

'They'd be basing it only on her previous singing from the beginning.'

I can help you: Cheryl saw something special in Rebecca Ferguson, 23, from Liverpool

A spokesman for The X Factor insisted it was within the rules for the judges to select candidates for the live finals regardless of their most recent performance.
But it is understood to be the first time a contestant has failed to perform during the judges' houses stage and still been put through.

A show source insisted producers would keep be keeping a close eye on Cher to make sure she is coping with the rigours of the show and her new-found fame

Broken dreams: After making it to the judges' houses stage for a second time, Treyc Cohen thought it was 'my year' but Cheryl didn't agree, despite saying she had one of the best voices

An ITV spokesman said: 'The welfare of contestants is of paramount importance and we are keeping a close eye on the young ones.

'There are members of production in the house with the contestants at all times and there is a counsellor available to them.'

Cheryl also dramatically broke down in tears during the decision making progress, but quickly regained her composure to lambast contestant Katie, for being 'a little bit annoying'.

Cheryl told her: 'First of all I want to say it's been a pleasure to get to know you as a person.

'I think you're quirky, I think you're original, I think there's something very intriguing about you, but I also have to say that there's a little something that I think people could find, if I'm being brutally honest, a little bit annoying.

'Also sometimes when I'm talking to you there's always something that I don't believe.'

Anastacia Baker, for the second year running, and Keri Arrindell had their hopes dashed

Joining Cher and Katie in the final is single mother Rebecca Ferguson, 23, from Liverpool, whose audition Cheryl missed as she battled malaria.

She told her: 'Normally when I have a first audition I have an initial reaction and I didn't have that.'

But Cheryl decided to take a risk. 'I think I can bring your confidence out of you. I'm going to take you through to the live final. I'm excited.'

But that left five girls drying their tears as they dealt with their rejection.
Gamu was told: 'I thought you were adorable, I got you. I love your style of song and how you perform.'

But it wasn't good news.

'I'm sorry Gamu, I don't think I can take you further forward. You just need to keep going and get some more experience.'

Anastacia Baker, 21, who got through to the judges' houses stage in 2008 but collapsed, missed out once again.

'I have not given up, I'm doing this because this is what I'm born to do and I'm doing it,' she told the camera.

'Isn't it crazy to be here again?' asked Cheryl. And she was pleased to see how Anastacia had matured.

'It's like chalk and cheese, You've changed your image, it's beautiful.'
But it wasn't enough. 'I do believe that you've got something. But I'm sorry.'
Dermot couldn't believe it. 'Not again, eh?' he asked her.

Treyc Cohen also made it to the judges' houses stage last year and again failed to make the live shows,

'Will and I both loved your voice,' she was told. 'But we asked ourselves where would she fit into the market today?'

Treyc kept smiling, but Cheryl worried: 'I think she thought she was going to go through.'
And Keri Arrindell, 23, and Raquel Thomas, 19, both got a no.

Big Brother winner Josie bids to shift her spare tyre with TWO personal trainers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf4kcc_8Sggendofvid

[starttext]

By SARAH BULL

Put through her paces: Big Brother 11 winner Josie Gibson undergoes a gruelling workout in London

She won Big Brother viewers over with her bubbly personality and down-to-earth attitude.

But it seems Josie Gibson, who was crowned the winner of the 11th series of the reality show, wants a figure that will fit in on the celebrity circuit.

The Size 16 Bristolian, 25, has embarked on a new regime to lose her spare tyre - and such is her determination she is using two personal trainers.

Dressed in a tight black and blue workout outfit, Josie was seen taking part in an energetic workout and taking on an obstacle course in a London park.

Tough: The 25-year-old Bristolian is hoping to shed her excess pounds and slim down from a size 16 to a 12

While her housemates, and boyfriend John James, accepted Josie for who she was during her time in the house, she admitted she felt 'a little bit insecure' about her size and wanted to join a gym when she left the reality TV show.

But despite the photographs of Josie exercising could be misinterpreted as a way for her to sell a fitness DVD when she has slimmed down, she insists she doesn't want to follow in the footsteps of stars including Natalie Cassidy by shedding weight and then putting it back on.

Limbering up: Josie stretched ahead of starting her workout in a London park last week

Showing off some moves: Josie appeared to be dancing with her trainer, having kicked off her trainers to give herself more mobility

She said in a recent interview: 'I couldn’t be one of those size zero women. It wouldn’t suit me. I’d like to be a comfortable 12. But not any smaller.

'You see all these stars and they lose all that weight and it just doesn’t suit them. Take Natalie Cassidy, I think she looks better when she’s got all her curves.

'You’ve got to be the size you are comfortable with and I am a womanly woman. I am a little bit insecure about it.

Giggles: Josie couldn't stop laughing as she tried to do a set of press ups with her TWO trainers

Struggling: While Josie looked as though she was struggling at points, she kept a smile on her face throughout

'I want to lose a little bit of weight - but I love a nice curry, that’s my downfall. I love Jamaican food, a nice bit of curried goat.'

However, Josie's boyfriend John James said despite her admitting one of the reasons she wants to lose weight is to please him, the Australian is adamant he loves Josie however she looks.

He said recently: 'I couldn’t care less what Josie weighs. I love her just the way she is. It’s up to her completely.'

Watch and learn: Josie looks deep in concentration as her trainers talk her through one difficult move

Careful, Josie! The Big Brother winner nearly slips as she does a pull up while holding onto a metal bar

But it's not only a punishing exercise regime Josie wants to stick to - she has also embarked on a strict diet.

Writing on her Twitter page earlier this week, Josie told fans: 'I'm on detox for 6 months', before adding: 'Just had fitness training. Hard work but loving it!!'

However, Josie is struggling somewhat with the food she is allowed to eat, tweeting: 'Mmmmmmm my fav bit of curry goat or brown stew chicken right up my street. Thai food and caribbean food is me fav mmmmm (sic).'

And stretch: Josie and her trainers relax as they cool down at the end of their vigorous workout

Balancing: Josie's trainer ensures she is completing the move properly as she stretches her hamstring

She then added: 'Is dyin for a chocolate bar but on a diet. X x x x'
And, continuing her health kick, Josie is also attempting to quit smoking, and has cut down to just one or two a day.

Meanwhile, Josie's relationship with John James is going from strength to strength.
John James admitted in OK! magazine that he is thrilled to have proved is critics wrong and is already planning how he can take their relationship to the next level.

Giggles: Josie appeared to be enjoying herself during the workout, laughing and dancing with her trainer

Bubbly: Josie won over viewers with her bubbly personality when she appeared on Big Brother

He said: 'I want to take her to Paris and get to the top of the Eiffel Tower with the whole city laid out beneath us and propose to her there. And if she says no, I can jump off the top!'

John James, is planning to move in with Josie in the near future, also said he can't believe how lucky he is to have found his soulmate in the Big Brother house.

He added: 'We think alike, me and Josie. We're the same in our different ways. We just realise it all the time, how alike we are are. Apart from the fact that I am tidy and she is messy.'

In love: Josie with boyfriend John James at the Big Brother 11 wrap party earlier this month

Jamie Oliver finds a new use in the kitchen for his Emmy Award for Food Revolution

Chop chop: Jamie Oliver uses the Emmy Award that he won for Food Revolution to slice cucumber in the hilarious video on his official website

He might take his cooking seriously, but Jamie Oliver has made a hilarious video showing how he's going to use his Emmy Award statuette in the kitchen.

The star won the gong last week at the prestigious 62nd annual awards, held in Los Angeles, for his U.S. reality TV show Food Revolution.

But the video opens with the chef chopping cucumber with the much-prized gold statuette.

Haute cuisine: The Naked Chef uses the base of the gold statuette to crush a clove of garlic

Proud winner: The celebrity chef looks thrilled to bits with his award after chopping a cucumber to bits with it

Sporting a cheeky grin, the chef says: 'I've got this beautiful new kitchen gadget, it's brilliant! I've got a double bladed knife, a balloon whisk here, I've even got a garlic crusher and it works brilliantly, I've got a bottle opener here, it's everything I've ever ever dreamed of.'

He then demonstrates its use as a garlic crusher by bashing a clove on the work surface with the statuette's base, before seriously thanking the Academy who gave him the award for Best Reality Show, as well as those who he'd filmed Food Revolution with.

The TV series filmed the British chef trying to change school menus and residents’ eating habits in the U.S. town of Huntington, Virginia.

Art of cooking: The celebrity chef larks around turning the Emmy into a fruit bowl

Happy eater: Jamie smiles for the camera after decorating his Emmy Award with tomatoes, apples, herbs and a lemon

He enthuses: 'In all seriousness, this is a beautiful pat on the back for me, and I'd like to thank all of the crew, we had the most astounding crew, both English and American that absolutely lived The Food Revolution and contributed over and above what they were asked to do, they were incredible.'

Jamie also says that the project he started is still 'going strong' in Huntington, with local schools in particular still eating fresh food.

Jamies then concludes his video address by saying he's going to use the award in all his cooking shows from now on - then begins decorating it with fruit, vegetables and herbs.

He says: 'It's above and beyond a fruit bowl, look at that, it looks good, it's contemporary, you can sit it on table, you can put a candle in it, it's just great.'

Jamie meanwhile, who celebrated his 10th wedding anniversary in July with wife Jools, is expecting his fourth child.

The baby will be brother or sister to Petal Blossom Rainbow, one, Daisy Boo, seven, and Poppy Honey, eight. Jools is due to give birth any day now.
