Going home for Christmas: Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban lead their daughter Sunday Rose in Sydney International Airport earlier today

After spending the week in Australia, no doubt Nicole Kidman was anxious to get home to the U.S. in time to prepare for Christmas.

But the actress, husband Keith Urban and their daughter Sunday Rose found their plans disrupted today when their flight was grounded at Sydney airport.

The trio were sitting onboard a Qantas Boeing 747 awaiting takeoff at 3:10pm local time when engineers discovered an engine malfunction.

After an anxious wait, all the passengers were asked to return to the terminal, where they remained for several hours.

However, Kidman and Urban declined to spend hours waiting in the terminal and decided to return to their home in the Sydney suburb of Lavender Bay.

Although their fellow passengers later boarded a separate plane at 7:30pm, the famous couple are expected to fly to Los Angeles on Christmas Eve.

A Qantas spokesman said: There was a vibration in one of the engines and the plane immediately rejected take-off, which is standard procedure in that situation.'

Ahead of their interrupted journey back home, the family were seen looking summery as they arrived at the airport.

Kidman, 43, looked festive in a stylish red maxi dress with a black blazer and flat sandals.

As she strolled into the airport, she held hands with her two-year-old daughter Sunday, who looked adorable in a multi-coloured dress sandals.

Once they eventually arrive in LA, the couple are expected to transfer to Nashville, Tennessee, where they live most of the year.

The couple spent a week Down Under so they could celebrate an early Christmas with Kidman's parents Anthony and Janelle, who live in Sydney.

During their trip, the couple filmed a segment for the Oprah Winfrey Show Australian TV special and Kidman visited sick youngsters at Sydney's Children's Hospital.

But after spending Christmas at their Nashville country home, Kidman will be on the publicity trail in the U.S. for her new film Rabbit Hole.

The film stars Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as a married couple, who lives change forever when their young son is killed in a car accident.

After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September, it is due for release in the U.S. next month and in the UK in February.
